Buy an Electric Vehicle and Go Green Today

Go Green: Buy an Electric Vehicle Today
It is everywhere you look these days.  Everyone is talking about going green and making an attempt to save our environment from destruction.  There are so many different ways of “going green” and some ways are more effective than others.  Some people may choose to take the bus to work, while others may opt to buy an electric vehicle, such as an electric car, electric scooters or electric bicycles.  These are all great ways to start to make less of an impact on our natural environment.

Whatever your reason is for wanting to “go green,” there is no shortage of suggestions from both environmentalists and everyday citizens on how you can lessen your carbon footprint.  Do you already take advantage of the recycling program that is offered in your city or town?  Do you have a compost pile at your home that you put all of your biodegradable material in so that it doesn’t just get thrown out with the rest of the trash?  These are a few great options that you can do at home to go green and help save our planet from destruction.

While recycling and composting are two great examples of green behaviors, these alone will not save our planet from eventual environmental destruction if we don’t make some changes to our fossil fuel consumption patterns.  There are so many of us that just can’t afford to buy a new EV (electric vehicle) or a hybrid vehicle right now.  If you are one of those people, you may want to consider getting an electric car conversion kit for your existing gas guzzler.  These kits can be installed to turn your gas guzzler into an economically efficient and environmentally friendly vehicle.

If you are a college student, you may already ride a moped to get to and from your classes.  Mopeds are extremely popular on college campuses and they do get great gas mileage compared to cars.  However, there are also electric mopeds that can be purchased and with these, you never will have to fill up on gas again.  You can simply recharge the battery of your electric moped and not worry about ever running out of gas again.

Many college students also choose to ride their bicycle to class.  It seems like there were also hundreds of students biking about when I was in college.  However, we didn’t have electric bikes as an option back then.  With an electric bike, you can make the commute to work or school without even breaking a sweat.  With many electric bicycles on the market, you can also peddle your bike if you so choose.  It is nice to have that option, especially when you commute to work and don’t want to be sweaty at work all day.

If you follow the electric vehicle news, you probably already know that there are electric buses that are on the market that could greatly change the landscape of urban commuting.  While it may be expensive for a city to implement new electric buses to replace the old models, imagine how much money this could save in the long run, not to mention how much gas it could save too!  There really are so many ways that we can continue to “go green” as a society.  The problem seems to be getting everyone on the same page and as a society, we need to start thinking more about saving our planet than turning a profit.

Wine Gifts and Wine Accessories for Wine Enthusiasts

Wine Gifts and Wine Accessories
As wine drinking becomes more and more popular, wine gifts and wine accessories are becoming great go-to gifts for many people.  Wine drinkers everywhere are demystifying wine.  Restaurants and bars are offering greater wine selections every day.  You no longer need to be a professionally trained sommelier to be able to select great wine and pair it successfully with your favorite foods.  As wine becomes more and more part of our everyday culture, wine gifts and wine accessories are also appearing at the top of must-haves in your home and on your go-to gift giving guide.

Wine gifts are plentiful and fun!  One of the best go-to gifts for the wine enthusiasts in your life are some etched wine glasses.  Of course, they’ll need a set in red wine glasses and white wine glasses.  You can have them etched and personalized for your friends with their names, anniversary dates, or birthdays.  The sky is the limit! If personalization isn’t your cup of tea, you can always get some etched wine glasses that have fun “tipsy” phrases like tipsy, toasted, merry, loopy, or boozy.  Again, the sky is the limit! Have fun and get your friends a fun and witty set of glasses that will be a great conversation started at your next happy hour or cocktail party.

Regular wine drinkers will find a plethora of useful gadgets that all come in very handy to have lying around the house.  A Rabbit corkscrew is a must-have.  It can open a wine bottle in mere seconds and takes all of the guesswork out of operating a manual corkscrew.  Your days of broken corks will all but disappear with a Rabbit corkscrew.  If you don’t finish a bottle of wine, items to help preserve it are a must-have.  Stoppers and bottle toppers are necessary.  You can get fun versions that will make your leftover wine a pleasure to pour next time you enjoy a glass.  If you need to save an open bottle of wine for a few days, a vacuum set is a must have.  These handy items vacuum seal a bottle and have special toppers that will seal out the air and preserve your open wine much longer than just stopping it with the original opened cork.

If red wine is your preference you know you must aerate your wine properly to help release the tannins that help bring out the best flavor in a nice bottle of red.  There are a number of decanters available that are both practical and wonderfully stylish.  Red wine aerators are a great way to aerate your red wine without the wait!  Every bottle of red wine should be served through an aerator if you are at a party where you are constantly opening new bottles.  They are small and portable and a definite must-have in a wine-drinking household!

It is easy to conclude that wine gifts are going to be well-received.  If you are looking for a gift and you know the intended would love a nice bottle of wine, then you can assume they would also love to have a wine related gift or accessory to enhance their wine drinking experience.  It’s time to get shopping!

E-cigarettes Give Smokers a Needed Alternative

An Alternative to Tobacco Cigarettes: Electronic Cigarettes

With the overabundance of negative information on tobacco cigarette use, it is no wonder that consumers are eager for an alternative. E-cigarettes, or electronic cigarettes, are just the alternative smokers have been searching for. Even in the face of negative press, warnings from the FDA and the threat of ban in the United States, many are forced to agree that electronic cigarettes certainly have their benefits and advantages. The e-cig or electronic cigarette allows the smoker to “go through the motions” of traditional cigarette smoking without the major risks associated with smoking and tobacco use in general. With no tar, no passive smoking, no pollutants and no real smoke, the electronic cigarette is exempt from the current smoking ban laws.

Speaking about the principle behind the electronic cigarettes, Mr. Dan McNally, a representative from a cigarette alternative website said, “While Electronic cigarettes look, feel and taste much like traditional cigarettes, they function very differently. You see, electronic cigarettes do not actually burn any tobacco, but rather, when you inhale from an e-cigarette, you activate a flow sensor which releases a water vapor containing nicotine, propylene glycol and a scent that simulates the flavor of tobacco. All of which simply means that electronic cigarettes allow you to get your nicotine fix while avoiding all of the cancer causing agents found in traditional cigarettes such as tar, glue, hundreds of additives and hydrocarbons.”

SmokeTip electronic cigarettes do not require a lighter to light or a flame of any kind.  Instead, the air is drawn when the smoker creates pressure inside the electronic cigarette to ignite the processor and that begins the atomizing process. The liquid mixture (water, nicotine and a possible flavoring of some kind) from the cartridge is injected into the atomizer to vaporize it and this vapor is inhaled by the smoker. The propylene glycol releases a smoke-like mist and the user gets the stimulus of nicotine immediately. But the mist that is exhaled is free of any nicotine so there is no secondary inhalation and no associated passive smoking symptoms.

Premium e-cigarettes mimics a conventional tobacco cigarette in look and feel. The end of the electronic cigarette lights up with an LED resembling the glow at the end of a traditional cigarette. The bans against smoking that generally apply to tobacco cigarettes in public places are a moot point with electronic cigarettes as there is no actual smoke involved. Smokers can save money by switching to electronic cigarettes too. After the initial purchase of a starter kit, smokers can begin to see huge savings. Depending on the unit purchased, each nicotine cartridge sold by some companies is equal to roughly a half of pack to a pack-and-a-half of tobacco cigarettes. There is no sales tax, unlike traditional cigarettes and money spent on smoking paraphernalia such as lighters and ash trays is a non issue because these things are not needed with e-cigarettes.

Despite recent news releases stating the contrary, electronic cigarettes are safe. Clinical trials have now been carried out in New Zealand by Dr. Murray Laugeson of Health New Zealand. The test found that the Electronic Cigarette tested was: “…very safe relative to cigarettes, and also safe in absolute terms on all measurements we have applied. Using micro-electronics it vaporizes, separately for each puff, very small quantities of nicotine dissolved in propylene glycol, two small well-known molecules with excellent safety profiles, – into a fine aerosol. Each puff contains one third to one half the nicotine in a tobacco cigarette’s puff. The cartridge liquid is tobacco-free and no combustion occurs.”–Source: Safety Report by Health New Zealand (PDF) Further research into electronic cigarettes continues to be carried out in New Zealand.  It is very clear then that electronic cigarettes are a safe alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes.

Yes, It Really Does Matter

How many times have you heard somebody refer to a college degree as “just a piece of paper?” This is usually used in the context that getting a college degree is not necessary to be successful in the business world. Many people attempt to denigrate the worth of a degree in order to make them feel better about their lack of education. Some people are actually misinformed, and think that education is not an important factor in professional success. These people could not be farther from the truth. When it comes to determining whether or not a college degree is relevant, yes, it really does matter.

College is not just four years spent living in dorm rooms and eating pizza for dinner. It is not just about rooting for a school football team and figuring out who you are. It is so much more than figuring out what you want to do with your life. College is about getting an education. College is about learning the skills that will make you marketable in the future. College is about taking the first step towards financial success through a career. Without a college education, you risk being relegated to the lower rungs of the corporate ladder, passed by regularly by the people who took the time to get an education.

College is easier to attend than ever. In the old days, you had to attend a “brick and mortar” traditional college and go to class on a limited schedule. Working and attending college simultaneously was extremely difficult. If you were not suited to the traditional classroom environment, you were pretty much out of choices. Today, that type of school still exists, but other choices are available for people who want something else. Schools are catering to working adults more than ever. Many schools offer night programs and weekend programs. Some of these programs are the normal semester length and some are abbreviated. The abbreviated programs use longer class periods and more classes per week to get through the curriculum faster. For people who cannot reasonably attend a traditional school, online schools are becoming more and more prevalent. These schools allow you to learn from home, interacting through bulletin board websites with your instructors and other students. Online schools have brought college education to every corner of the country. All that is needed is an Internet connection and the will to learn.

College is important. A person with a high school diploma can expect to earn an average of $34,000 a year. A person with a Bachelor’s degree can expect to earn an average of $65,000 a year. Over the span of a career, the difference is huge. The person with the high school education can expect to work from paycheck to paycheck, and will definitely struggle trying to support a family. The person with the Bachelor’s degree can more comfortably support a family and will likely have extra money to put away for retirement. If that does not convince you that a college education is necessary, nothing will. No, it is not just a piece of paper. Yes, it really does matter.

My Identity was Stolen!

My Identity was Stolen

Somehow, someway, after all the precautions taken, my identity was stolen. The thieves could have pilfered through my trash for information, hacked into my computer or found my social security number on some old medical bill or school document. I am not sure what happened or how, but I know I need to fix it quickly.

I have been told that it is of vital importance to keep a detailed and accurate record of all of the details of my conversations and copies of all correspondence during the hell that has become getting my identify back. The first step I will take is to review my credit reports for errors and problems. At that time, I will notify the credit company that I need to place a fraud alert on my credit report. This company is obligated by law to notify the other 2 companies of my alert. Fraud alerts will keep the scoundrels from opening any more accounts in my name for a short or long term. Usually there is a toll-free fraud number to call and report these problems and you should receive a confirmation from each company. An initial fraud alert will expire in 90 days. This alert is good if you suspect you have been robbed of your identity, like if your wallet has been stolen. An extended fraud alert stays on each of your credit reports for seven years. If you are SURE you are a victim of identify theft, this will ensure that potential creditors will contact you before credit will be issued in your name.

After I am sure that each company had been properly notified of any transactions and accounts that weren’t mine, I placed a fraud alert on my account. After doing this, I asked for a free copy of my report to review. At this time, I also requested that only the last 4 digits of my social security number be printed on my report from now on. Once I get the hard copies of these reports I will go over them with a fine tooth comb. I will need to verify addresses, phone numbers, employers and all outstanding debt and accounts are correct. It will be a huge undertaking, but any fraudulent information will have to be changed or removed as soon as possible. It will probably be necessary to call all the account holders directly to report the fraud and close accounts and/or dispute charges. Again, keeping in mind that I need to get correspondence in writing that the account has officially been closed is important for the future if the bad debt shows up again. It will be important to continue to check for fraudulent activity regularly for the next year and monitor my credit reports often.

Finally, it is important that I file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC now has an online form and a 1-800 number to help combat the complaints against identity theft. This complaint will be logged and will help law enforcements and other officials track down these I.D. thieves. When this is done I will provide the local police with a copy of my FTC complaint and ask them to attach it to the police report in my file.

Erasing the Razor or Alternative Methods of Hair Removal

Erasing the Razor or Alternative Methods of Hair Removal

Body hair removal is as much part of any woman’s routine as brushing teeth or putting on lipstick. Hair removal techniques were known to women centuries ago and many, though transformed, are still used today. Shaving is one of the most common methods of hair removal. It also has many drawbacks, fast growth of new hair and ingrown hairs being a few. If you are one of those women who is tired of cuts left by your razor and coarse stubble growing back in a day or two, you may want to think of switching to another method of hair removal. Thankfully, once you throw away your razor, you will not want it back as there are many alternatives to shaving with fewer, if any, drawbacks.

One of the most popular hair removal methods today is laser hair removal. During a session, a hair removal specialist passes an intense laser light through your skin, destroying the hair follicle instantly. Unfortunately, one needs several sessions of laser treatment targeting a specific area of the body before the area can be completely hairless. Laser hair removal is expensive, and several sessions can become a huge burden on your finances. Electrolysis is yet another method that results in permanent hair removal. It is performed by sliding a very thin metal probe into hair follicle and delivering electrical charge to it. Electrolysis, just like laser hair removal method, is costly, but in addition it is quiet painful.

Another alternative to shaving is depilating cream. Chemical depilators come in cream, lotion or gel variety, as well as roll-ons or sprays. All of them use calcium thioglycolate, sodium thioglycolate or sodium hydroxide to dissolve hair below the skin surface. Weakened hair can then be simply washed off. While convenient and relatively inexpensive, depilating substances can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, and can not be used on one’s face and certain sensitive body areas. Plus, just like shaving, this method does not keep your skin hair free for very long – new hair grow within several days.

Waxing remains the best alternative to shaving compared to all other methods mentioned above. Waxing kits are sold everywhere and use both cold and hot wax, as well as tools like spatula and strips to make your at-home hair removal session more successful. But in reality you need training and experience in order to handle waxing properly, so doing it yourself is probably not a good idea. The best way to wax is to let the process be handled by a specialist. Hair removal specialists at salons such as the José Luis Salon of Austin, TX, offer waxing of various parts of your body and do it safely and mess-free. You do not need to worry about warming your own wax and finding the right place in your home to handle the procedure. And you never have to see your razor again! Wax at José Luis Salon when it is convenient for you and enjoy smooth, hairless skin for weeks.

Changes in vision and LASIK

Changes in Vision and LASIK

Many people are drawn to the idea of LASIK eye surgery because it seems like an easy and quick way to correct their vision. Those who have been wearing glasses or contacts for decades are especially excited about the prospect of having to no longer worry about their vision. Many teenagers are also intrigued by LASIK because they are often embarrassed to have to wear glasses.

However, LASIK surgery is not right for everyone. For example, teenagers under 18 years of age cannot legally have the procedure performed on them because their eyes are still growing and changing. Also, pregnant women and people with certain eye diseases are also not good candidates.

One thing about LASIK that some people might not be aware of is that you will not be able to have the procedure done if your eye prescription has changed recently. Typically doctors want to see a stable prescription for at least one year. Some doctors will require two years or more. The reason for this is that LASIK is designed to be a permanent solution. You don’t want to have your eyes change again in a year and then still need to wear glasses because you had the surgery too soon.
Do not be frustrated if your doctor tells you at your LASIK consult that you need to wait another year to have it done. Just realize that it is for your own benefit. Do you really want to pay all the money for the surgery only to learn in a year or two that your vision has changed again and the LASIK only cured your previous vision problems?

Some people have questions about what happens if their vision gets worse after their LASIK surgery. Given that people’s eyes do worsen as we age, this is a good question to ask. In some cases you may still need to use reading glasses when you get older because often senior citizens develop problems with their close-up vision. This does not mean that the LASIK did not work. Whatever condition you had treated by the procedure is not returning. Rather, it is a new vision problem that developed as you aged.

Another thing besides age that may change your vision after LASIK is a medical problem that you did not previously have. For example, diabetes can lead to vision problems like blurry vision and diabetic retinopathy. You could not have known that these problems would occur because you did not have diabetes when you had the surgery. Other eye problems like glaucoma or cataracts also likely will not be prevented by LASIK and can cause your vision to change as you age.

Keep in mind that while most people do end up with 20/20 vision following LASIK surgery, this is not the case for everyone. If you have very bad vision and presently require a very strong prescription, it is likely that you will still need glasses after the procedure. It will be a weaker prescription, however, because your eyes were corrected to a certain degree.

Look at Your Roots

Look at Your Roots

As we all move forward into the future, many of us look back in wonderment of where we came from. We usually know our parents and grandparents. Some of us knew our great-grandparents. Some of us were even lucky enough to hear stories about relatives in generations past to have a better idea of the history of our families. But most of us can only go back so far, and with that, we only have so much information. Tracing the family history back to its origins sounds like an extremely difficult task that many do not want to take up. With the Internet, the task has become much easier.

Many Americans have a hodge-podge of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. People from many different countries around the world came to America in different periods. Their descendants mixed together to give us the diverse Americans that we have today. It is not out of the ordinary to see a person with African, Irish, and American Indian ancestors. Nor is it strange to see a person who is part Chinese and part Welsh. Mexican-Swedes dot the country side right along-side Japanese-Pakistanis (ok, that one might be going a little far). The point is that America truly is a melting pot. Europeans and Asians often live in the same place that their family has for many generations. Not so with Americans. Their family histories were lost on the trip across the ocean as they came to the land of new beginnings.

With the rise of the Internet, access to records and information has become much easier. Websites and groups are set up to help people discover their genealogy. Lots of options exist for people who want to know about their family’s past. Some sites allow people to research the roots of a name. They can see where the name originated, whether it has changed over the years and other derivations of the root name if it has changed. For a fee you can even get a historical background of the name, learning about the people who created the name in its original form. Other sites go into more detail. These sites let you set up a family tree. You can start small, entering yourself and your children, your parents and grandparents, going back as far as you can. These sites are often connected to databases full of historical records. You can often take a step-by-step journey back through the generations of your family, finding each earlier generation from their children. Some sites even allow members to link to other members’ family trees when they find a link in the tree where they are related. This helps the community grow, and links people who did not know that they had common relatives.

Knowing where we come from helps us figure out who we are. Knowing the history of our families gives us a sense of belonging and helps us to feel like we have real roots. If you really want to know where you come from, the tools are available that allow you to figure out as much as is available.

Recycling Inkjet Cartridges

Recycling Inkjet Cartridges

If you’re throwing away your inkjet and toner cartridges when they are no longer useful, you’re not the only one. More than 13 cartridges are discarded in the United States every second. Recycling these cartridges is easy and helps keep our landfills free of this plastic and ink debris. Also, it takes about 80% less energy to remanufacture plastic from recycled materials than to make new plastic. By recycling these cartridges we can help save on the energy used to manufacture plastic and keep our landfills cleaner.

Millions of ink and toner cartridges wind up in landfills every year. These cartridges are made from plastics that can take up to 1000 years to decompose. The first step to take is to use cartridges more than once when possible. A refill kit can be purchased at most office supply stores and can be used to refill the cartridge up to three times before you need a new one. Also, some office supply and drugstores will refill them for you for a fee that will cut down on mess, time and expense of doing it yourself.

Take empty cartridges from fax machines, copiers and printers to an appropriate recycling drop off center. Some cartridges can be refilled and resold at a lower price and some will simply be recycled. There are many websites you can use to help you determine the proper way to recycle these cartridges and where to do it in your area.

Some companies will take their used inkjet and toner cartridges back for free – including Hewlett Packard. These companies will provide you with a mailer or shipping label so you can mail them back at no cost to you. These cartridges will be recycled or refurbished.

Additionally, many companies now offer recycling programs to help fundraising efforts in school. You can check with your local schools to see if they have this type of program or search online for cartridge recycling and charities. These programs have a drop box located in the school to collect toner, ink and fax cartridges that are no longer useful. A company comes at a designated time to pick up the full box and will pay the school a predetermined amount for each cartridge they receive. The program is free to the school and adds an additional way to collect money without hassling the parents or school board. These fundraising programs usually also accept cell phones and cell phone batteries.

Other organizations and charitable programs also participate in the same recycling efforts for toners and ink cartridges. If you aren’t sure where you might be able to donate these you can search online to find an organization that participates. You can request a free, pre paid mailer and request that any money made from your donation be sent directly to your charity of choice.

Most of the programs that facilitate these recycling programs will also send you direct pre-paid mailers and reimburse you directly for recycled cartridges and cell phones if you want to see if you can make a little money and feel good about your environmental efforts at the same time.

History of Automatic Teller Machine

Automatic Teller Machine

An automatic teller machine allows a bank customer to conduct banking transactions from any machine at any bank or other public locations around the world. This invention has substantially increased the ease of use of financial transactions and led to other instruments such as point of sale and debit cards. Many inventors claim to have contributed to this development that has provided considerable ease to the financial world.

In 1939 a Turkish man named Luther Simjian patented an early predecessor to the contemporary automatic teller machine (ATM). It wasn’t very successful, but held more than 20 patents for different segments of the machine and it’s inner workings. His concept was of a “hole-in-the-wall” machine that allowed customers to make financial transactions without the need for a banker. After installing and testing it in a bank for more than six months, it was reported that that there was little demand and the invention’s usefulness was not needed. Simjian went on to invent many more useful things before he died such as the teleprompter and automatic postage-metering machine.

James Goodfellow of Scotland has a patent date of 1966 for a version of the more modern ATM. However, according to BBC News, a British man named John Shepherd-Barron invented and installed “the first” ATM in Barclays Bank in London in 1967. He was the first person to come up with the concept of personal identification numbers (PIN). However, these early machines did not have plastic cards. Checks with Carbon 14 marks were accepted. He was managing director for De La Rue Instruments, which is the company that manufactured the first ATMS. However, he never patented his ATM invention and protected his technology with trade secret rules. John Shepherd-Barron was invited to speak at a banker’s conference in the United States in 1967. After this conference, 6 machines were ordered and installed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In the United States, it wasn’t until 1968 when Don Wetzel and others invented an American made ATM. While waiting in line at a Dallas bank he came up with the idea of accessing cash through a machine. Mr. Wetzel worked for Docutel, an automated baggage-handling equipment manufacturer. He and the Chief Mechanical Officer (Tom Barnes) and an electrical engineer (George Chastain) developed a concept and prototype of a cash-dispensing machine. Docutel was issued a patent in 1973 for the concept of these employees. However, it was almost 15 years later before the mainstream banking world began installing and using ATM machines as part of their regular business.

In the beginning, these machines were not connected by an internal network and were therefore offline. These machines were not conducted immediate transactions from your checking or savings accounts. Therefore, banks were extremely cautious about who they gave access. Before ATM cards, credit cards were used and the user must have good banking records. Don Wetzel, along with Chastain and Barnes, developed the use of cards with a magnetic strip that had a personal identification number to get cash in the early 1970’s. These basic concepts are what we still use today.

So, You Are Finally A Doctor

So, You Are Finally A Doctor

Decades of hard work through from high school to medical school prepared you mentally for this day with proper education and training. Internships, rotations and residency were all to get you ready to be your own doctor and practice your own way. No more taking orders from more experienced physicians; you’re on your own. So, now what do you do? Your options are clearly to work for an established medical clinic, start working in a hospital or go into private practice of your own. If the latter is the option you choose, there will be an extreme amount of hard work up front for high amount of reward in the end.

Setting up your own medical practice will require a lot of upfront research. Just the business end of having a medical office is a lot to think about and not necessarily what you were trained for. The clerical and general operations will involve more questions day after day that you are required to have an answer for. What do you want the letterhead to say? How should we set up the waiting room? What type of phone system should we buy? Should we hire a cleaning service?

Other questions regarding computer equipment, software packages and even office furniture will become part of your everyday thought processes and will require decisions from you on a daily basis. Medicine becomes a business.

The actual equipment you need to begin practicing efficient and effective medicine is equally daunting. However, this area of expertise is easier for a new doc. The first thing you will need to do is have all the proper pieces of equipment for your particular specialty. For instance, pediatrics will require different equipment needs than Urology. Some equipment will not have to be purchased immediately and can be outsourced – such as lab equipment or a sonogram machine. However, some things such as doctor’s scales are important to correctly dispensing medicine and assessing health problems.

No matter what type of medicine your office will practice, a doctor’s scale will be an important piece of equipment. It’s a simple tool, but one of your most important assets for treating patients correctly and efficiently. Just as much time and energy should be focused on the set of scales in your office as many of the other pieces of equipment you will purchase. This will be used with every patient, every day and it is imperative that it provides accurate information every single time.

The leading manufacturer of medical scales is Detecto. They have been manufacturing scales for over one hundred years. In that time, they have made many happy customers in the offices and practices that have purchased their scales. They now offer a wide range of scales from infant and children’s scales to wheelchair and table scales and can customize a scale to the need of any office. Many scales also offer a height measurement tool. Some scales come with warranties and can be coupled with maintenance agreements. This is very handy for a busy physicians office with no time for upkeep on equipment, but a high expectation for it to work correctly all the time.

Food Scales as a Weight Loss Tool

Saturday, March 6, 2010

Food Scales

People who want to gain muscle and/or lose fat usually use diet and exercise as tools for their weight loss. It is imperative to be vigilant about the quality and quantity of the food going into your mouth if you intend to lose weight and possibly also build muscle. There is one tool that is often overlooked as a component in your battle with weight loss. A food scale is a vital instrument in controlling portion sizes and fighting the battle of the bulge every day.

When trying to find the balance between exercise and calorie intake a food scale can be extremely useful. In fact, many award-winning, professional body builders have used food scales for years to gauge portion size and control what they are eating. This helps a body builder gain control over how much intake of calories he needs to balance out with exercise. They can figure out exactly how much they can eat of certain nutrients to gain muscle and lose fat. So, if it’s good enough for a body builder, it should be good enough for you.

Most people grossly underestimate portion sizes and a food scale can help teach your eye what is correct. The serving sizes listed by the United States Department of Agriculture are a lot smaller than most people often think. For instance, one serving of meat is the size of a deck of cards and one half cup of blueberries is considered one serving of fruit. A food scale can help retrain your brain to exactly what these correct portions are.

Labels on packaged food can also be quite misleading. The number of calories and fat are listed on the package “per serving”. However, there could be four servings in that package. When you look more closely at the package, it’s possible that a serving is two ounces while the package holds a total of eight ounces. It’s easy to think there are only 120 calories when there is really 480 calories in what you’re eating.

A food scale never lies to you. You never have to wonder exactly how much food you are putting into your body in any given day. More expensive versions of food scales can also do much more than just weigh your food. Certain food scales can show you the nutrition information on exactly the portion size you are measuring and tally it throughout the day. This could help with your daily calorie count vs. exercise routine.

A food scale is also a good tool to use if you have health concerns. Some can track up to 12 nutrients found in certain foods. If you weigh these items, it can keep a running tally of what nutrients you ate in a particular time frame. If you need to find out how much saturated fat you are consuming, this would help with that. If a diabetic needs to track carbohydrates or an older woman needs to track calcium intake, this would be the perfect tool.

A food scale is a good tool for keeping yourself accountable in your fight for health and well being through exercise and the correct diet. You can use it for baking, calorie counting and simply to retrain yourself into understanding the correct portions.

Making the Perfect Margarita

After a long workweek, sitting in traffic, carting kids around and paying the bills, a good happy hour is often in order to help relieve the stress of your everyday life. With the increasingly rising and constant issues of waiting around at a fancy patio restaurant, tightening finances, lack of time and the aforementioned kids, it is sometimes necessary to have your own happy hour at home. With a few tips and easy steps, it can be easy to host your very own private margarita happy hour on your own back patio. Add a few red pepper lights and some chips and salsa and you can relax and enjoy happy hour for as long as you’d like.

Acquiring a good margarita set can be the first and most important step to the perfect margarita. Having your supplies all together and ready when you need them can really simplify the process when you’re ready for a drink. A lot can vary from set to set and each person likes their margaritas differently, so it is important to customize a set to what you and your fellow drinkers need. If you can’t find a set that has everything you need, shop around until you find what you need. You can acquire pieces separately or put two sets together until you have all the items you will use regularly.

A good margarita set should have glasses, pitchers, and other accessories that you need to make and drink a perfect margarita. A good tip to keep in mind regarding pitchers is to make sure the pitcher is comparable with the size of the glasses. If you have huge glasses and a small pitcher then the pitcher is emptied quickly and it defeats the purpose of even having one. Also, keep in mind where you will be serving margaritas. If you live in warm weather climates and plan on your happy hour being held outside, it might be nice to have a large pitcher and small glasses. The glasses won’t have time to get hot and melt before you can drink it all.

You should have as many glasses as you will need for your regular home happy hours. They should be wide brimmed so you can salt the rims easily. Clear glass actually looks nicer and helps the margaritas pretty color shine through, but plastic could be a good option if you have kids and plan on being outside a lot. A cutting board and good knife is necessary for cutting limes. A lime serving tray might also be a nice tool for keeping limes in easy reach. A salt rimming set will help you salt the margaritas edge quickly and efficiently. It is a necessary tool for perfect happy hours.

After you purchase all the tools needed for the perfect margarita set, you can get started with your more economical and convenient happy hours. After a few evenings of unwinding under your chili pepper lights, you will fully appreciate the time spent finding the proper equipment and learning how to use it properly.
